According to a new study, people having PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) report a greater number of binge eating signs than people who were subjected to trauma but did not progress into PTSD symptoms. The study was led by the UM (University of Manitoba) researchers and findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. Dr. Natalie Mota—Assistant Professor of Clinical Health Psychology—is the senior author of the study and with Dr. Joel Braun—Lead Author of the study—said, “In a huge and regionally representative sample of more than 34,000 adults in the U.S., we discovered that binge eating was linked with PTSD in men and women.”
In both the sexes, individuals who encountered additional PTSD signs related to depressing mood and thoughts specially reported a higher number of binge-eating signs. This connection was not related to other mental health conditions. There are familiar links amid PTSD and many health behaviors like smoking and amplified alcohol usage. More of less research to date has aimed at the link amid eating behaviors and PTSD. Braun said, “It is likely that binge eating might serve as a means of coping with the distressing signs of PTSD.”
On a similar note, recently, a study showed that PTSD is linked to surged perils of ovarian cancer. Women who encounter six or more signs of PTSD at some point in life had two times higher menaces of progressing ovarian cancer in comparison to women who never experienced any PTSD symptoms, as per new research from scientists at Moffitt Cancer Center and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The study findings signify that having greater levels of PTSD signs, like being easily startled by normal noises or evading reminders of the traumatic incident can be linked with surged perils of ovarian cancer even decades later women experience a traumatic event.
